The challenges of the publishing journey

In the last month, during a period of transition, I set out to publish 4 of my books which have been in my mind for a long while now. The list of things you should consider in your own journey are below. These are not new and many other blogs say this, but it is worth repeating them in order of importance.

  1. Get at least two editors including a line-by-line editor. After I finished writing the manuscript for the first book, I got an editor to review it. She was a developmental editor and did a great job of checking the references and commenting on the ideas. She however didn't do a good job of line-by-line editing (the ones who read each sentence for typos, grammar et al). I was mortified to click publish and noticed some typos! I had to pull the e-book from pre-order.

  2. Invest in getting early reviews lined up. Millions of e-books are released daily, especially on Amazon and many of them are free. Readers have endless choices and so without having reviews, your book will be ignored, even if you have social media marketers promising you to show your book to 30m people. I paid but received not even one sell. Getting friends or paid for reviewers is worth the effort/investment.

  3. Your cover image cannot be underestimated. Even the best manuscript won't get anywhere without investing in a good cover design. Invest in finding the best for this.

So those are my 3 key tips for if you want to start on the publishing journey. That's the journey to how my most recent books were published.
